Sam Saunders fired an opening round 64 to lead after day one. The round was suspended due to darkness, but the majority of the field got through their rounds, with the last group getting through 11 holes. Saunders, who is the grandson of golf and iced tea related beverage legend Arnold Palmer, shot a bogey-free round, and made seven birdies. Five golfers, including world #3 Dustin Johnson, are tied for second at -5. Phil Mickelson, who has won this event twice, is three back of the lead at -4, after an impressive first round that included a chip-in eagle. Last week’s winner Jordan Spieth is -2 through 16 holes; and my prediction for this week, Bubba Watson, is +2 through 17. I guess my prediction luck runs out here.
