KUUUUUUUUUUUUCCHH. Sports nicknames that sound like your booing the athlete are awesome. They get the whole crowd involved, and they confuse the hell out of you if you don’t know the nickname. We heard a lot of “KUUUUCH” on the back nine at TPC Scottsdale on Thursday, where matt Kuchar went 5-under over the last 8 holes of the day. Kuchar had an eagle at 13, and an excellent chip leading to a tap in birdie on 17. The 38-year old tour veteran is looking for his first PGA Tour victory since 2014. Reigning champion Hideki Matsuyama teed off on the back nine this morning, and at -6 is one shot back of Kuchar headed into Friday. Brendan Steele, who’s round included a 190+ yard eagle hole out on 14, is also one back at -6. Last years runner up, Rickie Fowler, had a good first round, firing a 4-under 67. Phil Mickelson, who has won 3 times at TPC Scottsdale, opened with a 3-under round of 68. Jordan Spieth had several opportunities that he didn’t capitalize on, including a four putt bogey at 17 after driving the green on the par , and finished 1-under for the day.
Bonus Tiger Update:
He was pretty awful all together in Dubai this morning, as Tiger shot a 5-over 77 and never really had any legitimate chances. He also seemed to be walking gingerly, so the WD is something to look out for, despite the fact that he will likely miss the cut.
